CAVB RELEASES THE 2019 DRAFT VOLLEYBALL COMPETITIONS CALENDER

The CAVB Women's and Men's Qualifiers to the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup 2019, both of which are scheduled to be held from 1 to 5 May 2019, will qualify Africa's representatives to the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup 2019 for Women and Men to be held on 26 to 30 June 2019 (Women) and on 3 to 7 July 2019 (Men) respectively.

The African Nations Championships which are usually held during the month of September have been brought forward to July 2019. This is because the two events will be used to qualify the teams that will represent Africa in the 2019 FIVB Volleyball World Cup and which will be played on 14 to 29 September 2019 (Women) and 1 to 15 October 2019 (Men) Respectively. FIVB regulations require that all qualification tournaments are concluded at least 60 days before the start of the World Championships which the qualified teams will take part in.

For the FIVB International Olympic Qualification Tournament, Cameroon and Kenya Women, and Egypt, Tunisia and Cameroon Men teams are obliged to take part in pursuant to their current World Ranking for Senior Teams.

CAVB has also considered the time the qualified teams may require for visa applications and the amount of time the players may need to get to their pick performance as they prepare for the global events.

Lugogo Indoor Arena, Rwanda - 19th May, 2019

National Women's volleyball team Malkia Strikers edged out their East African rivals Rwanda in straight sets 3-0(25-10, 25-17, 25-10) as the 2019 all African games Zone 5 qualifiers served off at Lugogo indoor arena in Kampala, Uganda. Kenya is seeking the sole ticket to the Morocco bound games which will give them a chance to defend the title they won four years ago in Congo Brazzaville.

Head Coach Japheth Munala paraded a formidable starting line up that comprised setter Wacu, opposite player Makuto, Middle blockers Wisa and Atuka, outside hitters Murambi ans Captain Moim, and Libero player Kundu. The team established an early lead from the onset of the set, 8-2 heading into the first technical time out before they extended it further to 16-5 as the match progressed. Impressive fighting spirit and individual perfomances propelled theteam to bag the fisrt set 25-10.

Coach Munala retained the starting line up that ended the first set as Kenya stormed into an early lead 8-3. The Rwandese  side however put up a spirited fight in the second set despite trailing the 9 times African Champions from the start of the start. Their resistance did not pay off eventually as they went down 17-25 in the second set.

With a 2-0 sets advantage, Kenya began the third set on a high leading 13-3 before Coach Munala shuffled his squad bringing in Africa's best attacker this year, Chepchumba in place of Murambi, middle blocker Chebet for Atuka and setter Wanja for Wacu. The substitutions paid off as Malkia Strikers took the third set 25-10.

Coach Ramdoo was happy that the team played very well in their first match and he looks forward to help the team improve on a few areas as they get ready to face Ethiopia. “So far so good, its our first match of the all African games qualifiers and we played very well especially the back court and attack which worked very well for us, our services were fantastic and that made us win easily.” Said Coach Munala.

Kenya will play Ethiopia in their second match on Monday, 20th of May, 2019 at 1800 hours Kenyan time.
